Work Smarter — Find your Work-Life Balance
Work-life balance ranks as one of the most important factors in the workplace in today’s society.
The Conference Board of Canada’s Survey of Canadian Workers on Work-Life Balance (1999), found that twice as many Canadians reported mid to high levels of stress when they tried to balance their work and family or leisure time.
Statistics Canada also did a survey in 2009 regarding the work-life balance of older workers (link no longer valid) and it seems our statistics in this area are not improving.
So how can you be productive and healthy at work and at home? Remember that more working hours does not necessarily mean that more work is being done.
Try setting the example at work by telling your employees that after hours emailing is for emergencies only. Look into offering flexible, staggered hours or job sharing for yourself and your employees. If this is not feasible, motivate both your family and employees on how everyone can strike this balance in other ways.
Some tips on creating work-life balance in your life include:
- Separating work and time for family or leisure
- Creating a “top priority” list for both work and home
- Scheduling work and non-work activities in the same planner or calendar
- Delegating some of your tasks to others
- Taking on only what you know you can accomplish
- Listening to your body – take time to exercise, eat well and relax
